I am a 25 year old woman. I know that alcohol affects me more quickly than it does my boyfriend. Is this just because women weigh less than men?
Actually, how alcohol affects you has less to do with your weight and more to do with differences in the activity of enzymes in the stomach. Alcohol is broken down by an enzyme called Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH). Women have less ADH in their stomachs than do men, so even if you drink the same amount of alcohol as your boyfriend, you will get a higher blood level because less of the alcohol is broken down in your stomach which allows more of the alcohol to get into your blood. The higher the level of alcohol in your blood, the more intoxicated you will be.
